THE COUNT AND THE DUKE: CELEBRATING BASIE AND ELLINGTON
A fabulous evening of live jazz courtesy of Guildford Jazz in the beautiful Walled Garden at Loseley Park.
THIS EVENT HAS NOW SOLD OUT.
It’s time to pack a picnic, invite your friends, and join us for an evening of swing in a tribute to the great jazz legends Count Basie and Duke Ellington.Featuring the quintet of MARK BASSEY, one of the finest trombone soloists on the UK scene whose talent is equalled by his irrepressible showmanship, and tenor saxophonist KAREN SHARP, twice winner of the British Jazz Awards and former member of Humphrey Lyttleton’s band!
Count Basie and Duke Ellington were pianists, composers, big band arrangers and true jazz greats. Basie’s captivating piano technique married with top drawer arrangements left us with a legacy of material including the jazz standards ‘Jumpin’ At The Woodside’, ‘Everyday I Have The Blues’ and ‘April in Paris’. Ellington’s creative and distinctive ensembles featured soloists like Johnny Hodges and Cootie Williams, and his collaborations with composer Billy Strayhorn has given us long lasting jazz themes including ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing’ and ‘Take The A Train’. Expect swinging jazz and inventive solos all the way: this is feel-good music at its best!
The evening will open with a set of fantastic big band swing from our friends in the wonderful FARNAM BIG BAND!
“If you play a tune and a person don’t tap their feet, don’t play the tune.” – William “Count” Basie
“… Mark Bassey has an irrepressible character, and infectious sense of humour, and an astonishing agility around the instrument.” Sebastian Scotney, London Jazz
Music starts at 5.15pm, gates open at 5pm. (Please don’t come early as there will be no admission to the garden until 5pm.)
PLEASE NOTE, IN THE EVENT OF RAIN OR HIGH WINDS (OR ANY OTHER INHOSPITABLE WEATHER!) THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE IN NEARBY ST JOHN’S CHURCH, FARNCOMBE. IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES WE WILL COMMUNICATE THE CHANGE OF VENUE AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY VIA EMAIL TO TICKET PURCHASERS, ON OUR WEB PAGES AND THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA.
